My heroes have always been authors
Puddin: My mom is crazy about books.
It being Fall and all, she was talking about her Hemingway trip.
Her and her father would take trips together with a literary theme.
They did the Tony Hillerman tour of the Southwest,
(he writes mysteries set on the Navajo Nation).
There are no cats in those, so I wasn’t interested.
But I was interested in her Hemingway trip, he had LOTS of cats.
They were special cats, polydactyl cats (that means they had 6 toesies)
She placed lilacs on Ernest and Miss Mary’s graves.
She visited his memorial in Ketchum Idaho where he died.
This is the quote she quotes every first day of Fall,
it is on the base of his memorial.
It was all very intersesting, but …
where are all the polydactyl cats?!
“Best of all he loved the fall
the leaves yellow on the cottonwoods
leaves floating on the trout streams
and above the hills the high blue windless skies…now he will be a part of them forever.”
― Ernest Hemingway
Cat Mom: Today is Thankful Thursday,
and I am thankful for all the wonderful authors
that have taken me places and shown me the world
from the comfort of my home.

We so agree ~ and I still love the feel and smell of a real book in my hands over a newer “tech” device.
It is a favorite thing to visit thrift stores and scour shelves for old books, even ones once read and loved, perhaps forgotten but waiting for another read. In fact, will be driving to the countryside today to discover a newly found thrift and book shop ~ surely something special awaits!

We love books here too! It’s so nice that your Mom got to go on all those literary tours and visits. And Puddin, I think Hemingway’s home in Key West is now a museum and the descendants of his polydactyl cats are still there.
I love real books too, but for reasons of space and etc, I now do some reading on an electronic device. But I still fuss about it a lot.

My mom has always liked Hemmingway. She is so old she remembers when he became and angel. Mom hope some day to get to the Key West and visit his place. His books are timeless

A really great thankful of a great author that more should get to know in todays blurb world. I remember when my mom called a polydactyl cat we had a “Hemmingway Cat.” She explained that they all come from his place. Not sure of that but I was little and thought it was a great story that I myself told far and wide

Wow ! Our Mom loves Tony (and his daughter Anne) Hillerman’s books and would love that tour. But she also loves kitties – we have had several polydactyl family members. She also likes the “Midnight Louie” series (by Carole Nelson Douglas) but really has no plans to visit Las Vegas ! She does her traveling in the books !

Did you know that I was named after Mr. Hemmingway because I have extra toesies? ~Ernie

I always have more books on the bookshelves than I can possibly read. . . You can never have too many.

I checked the box again…
This is funny, but papa is reading ALL of Hemingway right now – For Whom The Bell Tolls is magnificent. Mama is about to plunge in (again) too.

I love that he was a cat person!

Dad says he’s right there with you on the books & authors thing. He’d be lost if he couldn’t have books around him all the time, and says he’d love to lock himself away in a room with a pile of books and lots of quiet (except for me and mom, of course). I know lots of people enjoy these reader tablets and whatnot, but dad loves reading actual books.

Whoa, you know about the Hemingway Museum in Key West, Florida…that is populated with cats?!?
You’ve GOT to visit there!
Tell me when you are going, and I’ll meet you there; the few times that I’ve been to Key West, I wasn’t able to visit there…weird, huh?

We are big readers here, too. I was a comparative literature major in college, and have always loved Hemingway.
